Angola Muxima

The Birth of Kizomba

Kizomba, is a dance and music genre originating in Angola during the late 1970s and early 1980s, evolved from traditional Semba music with Caribbean Zouk influences. The term means "party" or "celebration" in Kimbundu. Known for its slow, sensuous rhythms and smooth dance style requiring close partner connection, kizomba gained international popularity in the 1990s, spreading across Portuguese-speaking nations and Europe. Its romantic and intimate nature continues to attract dancers and musicians worldwide.

Kompa & Carribean Zouk

Following's independence in November 1975, the country gradually descended into a civil war that lasted until 2002.

During the late 1970s and into the 1980s, Angola experienced a significant cultural void. Many artists faced persecution, leading to executions, slaughter, exile, or escape, with over 5,000 people killed.

The repressive government enforced a curfew, resulting in the near disappearance of entertainment venues, with only backyard parties taking place from dawn to dusk. Live musical instruments became scarce, and recording studios were unavailable.

Musicians, singers, and writers either avoided producing new work or adhered strictly to the political line. Despite these challenges, music from the Caribbean began to gain global popularity, notably starting with Haiti’s kompa and later the French Caribbean zouk, popularized by Kassav in the early 1980s.
